Withers & Rogers Helps #ShakeYourPower Project

3 July 2014

Withers & Rogers is delighted to be supporting Sudha Kheterpal, best known as the percussionist from South London band Faithless, in providing intellectual property (IP) services for her #ShakeYourPower project.

#ShakeYourPower aims to bring clean energy to places in the world without electricity, through the medium of music. For the last year, Sudha has been developing a musical instrument, a prototype percussion shaker, which converts the energy from shaking it into electricity. Users can then plug in a light or charge up a mobile telephone.

After some initial research into advancements in the kinetic energy harvesting space and other energy harnessing techniques, she began the process of researching and developing SPARK with a product designer from the Royal College of Art.

Sudha has developed and created a small prototype percussion shaker called SPARK, which if shaken for 12 minutes will generate an hour’s worth of light. Russell Edson, a Patent Attorney in Withers & Rogers’ Advanced Engineering Group, has been working closely with Sudha and her company Bish Bash Productions to secure IP protection for the numerous innovations developed, including the SPARK shaker.

To help fund and support the project Sudha has launched a Kickstarter campaign. The campaign hopes to take the project to the final stages of development. This process has three parts;

  1. Take the prototype to finished product
  2. Manufacture and distribute the product
  3. Develop assembly kits to enable the end user to build their own SPARK.
